Chiang Rai is in the Golden Triangle region bordering Laos and Burma, and is closer to Vientiane, Yangon and Kunming than to Bangkok. The city is on the banks of the Mae Kok river, a tributary of the Mekong. In recent years Chiang Rai has become increasingly popular for those wishing to escape the overdeveloped South of the country, either as a place to settle down or for a vacation home. Some of the advantages of the region are the lush greenery, hills and temperate climate, making it ideal for trekking and other outdoor activities.

 

Chiang Rai city has less than 100,000 inhabitants, but has an airport with eight flights a day to Bangkok, two universities, four golf courses, two excellent hospitals, three English-language schools and three five star hotels. In many ways it combines the best of city and country living.

It is anticipated that Chiang Rai real estate will benefit economically in coming years from the opening up of the Mekong region and in particular from improved transportation links between China and Thailand.
